What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an orthodontic procedure that corrects teeth alignment issues in the form of clear tray aligners. They are easy to wear removable aligners made of a specially blended plastic, customised from your teeth’s measurements.

These aligners are strong enough to gently move your teeth into their desired position. The material is clear that they are hard to spot when someone is wearing them.

How does Invisalign work?

Invisalign clear trays are made from your measurements. They are customised to ensure efficiency. The trays have to be worn for 20-22 hours a day for them to work.

Even when you’re wearing the tray, you will have no trouble speaking or smiling. It is comfortable and will be hard to spot. The trays have to be removed when you eat, and again when you brush your teeth after your meal.

The aligner trays are changed every one to two weeks. These series of aligner trays will feel a little different, as it’s designed to continue shifting and moving your teeth.

Everytime you change a new tray means you are progressing and you are moving to the next “phase”.

Invisalign are made of plastic, yet they are different from retainers. Retainers just hold your teeth in place while Invisalign moves your teeth and jaw to correct the alignment.

The Invisalign Process

Getting straight teeth alignment is easy. It starts with a dental consultation with your cosmetic dentist Mandurah. Your teeth, jaw, and mouth are checked.

Your cosmetic dentist Mandurah will then take impressions of your mouth to get the measurements. These are sent to Invisalign where your clear aligners are made and customised. Your dentist Mandurah will create a dental treatment plan for you. This includes the duration of the treatment, the needed dental treatments aside from Invisalign, and care tips — all to help you achieve the best possible result.

X-rays, Photographs, and Getting the Impressions

Once you decide to have Invisalign, your dentist Mandurah will take X-ray and photographs of your mouth, teeth, and face from different angles to create your detailed dental map. This will serve as the basis for the dental work.

Your cosmetic dentist Mandurah will finally take impressions of your mouth for your measurements.

Prior Dental Treatments

In order to achieve straight and healthy teeth, you might be required to undergo prior treatments. An example is small composite patches. These patches are applied to each tooth, as these will help the Invisalign clear aligner have a strong grip on your teeth in order to move them. This is not always needed though, your dentist Mandurah will decide which prior treatments are necessary.
9

Fitting

On your first fitting, your new Invisalign clear aligners may feel strange on your mouth, this is normal as you are still adjusting.

Your dentist Mandurah will check and ask you how the aligners feel on your mouth. They should be tight to cause active movement, but shouldn’t be painful.

If you feel pain when wearing your Invisalign, don’t hesitate to tell your dentist Mandurah.

Expectations when Wearing your Invisalign

As you are adjusting to your new Invisalign aligners, you may feel some changes in your mouth. Don’t worry, this is all part of the adjustment. Below are some expected changes that you should feel:
9

Aching

This is to be expected because the trays are moving your teeth to your desired positions. This should happen every time you change your tray (happens every one or two weeks) but will immediately stop after a few days.
9

Sensitive Teeth

Your teeth may feel sensitive to hot/cold beverages. There are specialised toothpaste to relieve this. Talk to our caring staff for suggested toothpaste.
9

Speech

You may experience a difference in the way you enunciate. This is because the trays take up space in your mouth, limiting the space for your tongue.

To speed the adjustment period l, we recommend sticking to the 20-22 hours per day wear time.
